Loit wins Estoril Open
OEIRAS: Emilie Loit of France beat Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 7-6 in the Estoril Open final on Sunday and captured her second career title in two weeks. Third-seed Loit, who won the Grand Prix SAR in Casablanca last week, played with her right thigh bandaged, but she was the more composed player in the opening set in gusting winds and occasional light drizzle. Lara’s parade rescheduled
PORT-OF-SPAIN: A parade for West Indies captain Brian Lara, who reclaimed the highest score in Test cricket with an unbeaten 400 last week against England in Antigua, was changed to Monday. Prime Minister Patrick Manning and other officials will greet Lara at the airport upon his arrival from Guyana on Monday afternoon. The festivities were initially planned to begin on Tuesday. The prime minister has indicated that he approached his government colleagues to award Lara the Caricom Honour of Merit, the highest honour that can be bestowed on a Trinidad national. — AP
Sochaux win League Cup
PARIS: Goalkeeper Teddy Richert proved the hero on Saturday as Sochaux won the French League Cup for the first time, defeating Nantes 5-4 on penalty kicks. With the score tied 1-1 after extra-time, the match went to spot kicks and Richert, who had an outstanding match, dived low to his right to palm away Pascal Delhommeau’s weak strike. The win means Sochaux, last year’s losing finalist, automatically qualifies for next season’s UEFA Cup competition. — AP
Hewitt wins Love Match
BREE: Lleyton Hewitt beat his fiancee Kim Clijsters 9-8 in a charity Love Match which marked the Belgian’s return to court after being sidelined for a month with a wrist injury. In front of a sellout crowd of 3,500 in Clijsters’ hometown, Hewitt came back from 6-4 down to win the best-of-17-games lighthearted exhibition. “I’m happy to be back on court and run,” Clijsters said. “I gave her a test,” Hewitt said. Clijsters moved freely around the clay court and seemed little hampered by the injury. — AP
