Kathmandu, July 30 :

People of Okharpauwa Sisdole — the landfill site of the Valley’s garbage — today sent back all the vehicles carrying garbage.

“Some 20 vehicles of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) loaded with the garbage were not allowed to enter the landfill site and were compelled to turn back by the locals,” said Dinesh Thapaliya, the chief executive officer of the KMC.

The problem of the Valley’s garbage collection rose following the employee’s strike just

settled on Saturday after the garbage collected at the Khulamanch was cleaned.

“I had reached the KMC today with a sigh of relief after having the problem solved but as soon as I reached office I heard about the return of vehicles,” Thapaliya said. He also said that the garbage would be dumped at the riverside of Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City ward number 2 temporarily. “Even our friend of Kirtipur have assured to help for the crisis management where we can dump for the next two weeks,” he said.

According to Thapaliya, the locals have denied access to the KMC vehicles because the

Solid Waste Management Coordination Committee could not fulfil the aspirations of the local people.

Meanwhile, the meeting held today with the Coordination Committee at the Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre under the Ministry of Local Development concluded without any concrete decision.

Chief of the Solid Waste Management Section under the Environment Department of KMC Rabin Man Shrestha said the problem is with the two factions of the people there at Sisdole.

President of Okharpauwa Solid Waste Management Coordination Committee Ram Mani Ghimire said few dozens of people had opposed the flow of garbage demanding construction for a hospital and providing job to the locals.
