Bring on United, says double-talking Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he was confident his team would now go on to complete a domestic double after beating Chelsea 2-0 in Saturday’s 121st FA Cup final here at the Millennium Stadium.

Goals in the last 20 minutes from Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg sealed victory for the Gunners in a fiercely contested derby. Arsenal now need just a point to win the Premiership title with two league games remaining to secure their second league and cup double in four years.

A draw against Manchester United on Wednesday will see the Londoners take the title off the reigning champions.

“It was important to win the first trophy so we can go to Old Trafford to win the second,” Wenger said. “It is a boost for us, it will give us a lift and we will go there with belief. It is a big, tough game, it is another final but in the last three months it seems we have been playing a final every week.”

Wenger insisted his ban on alcohol would not be lifted despite lifting the cup because Wednesday’s match at United was far too important.

“We will have dinner tonight with all the players and their families but we will close that (the celebrations) at midnight because we all want to concentrate on the championship. Believe me, we will win the championship.”

The Frenchman insisted his side, who lost the final to Liverpool last season, were worthy cup winners having beaten three of the top five sides in the Premiership on their way to lifting the trophy for the eighth time.

Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri congratulated Arsenal but revealed Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who was substituted in the second half, struggled with the calf injury which had made him a doubt and John Terry, who came on at the start of the second half, was suffering from a virus.

“It was a very tactical match in the first half. In the second half we were confident of winning but when Ray Parlour scored it finished the match.”
