Janakpur, Gandaki win Volleyball

KATHMANDU: Janakpur and Gandaki won the men and women’s volleyball championship respectively in the first National Republic Sports Festival here on Wednesday. Janakpur defeated Dhaulagiri while Gandaki beat Bagmati in the final. Bagmati emerged team champions in karate, taekwondo and kickboxing while Bheri won the athletics team championship. Among the best players of the event were Narendra Prasad Bhatta and Keshari Chaudhary (athletics), Rita Maiya Saiju and Bikram Meche (karate), Amrit Mahato and Rajendra KC (taekwondo), Mima Tamang and Tok Bahadur Tamang (kickboxing), and Ram Karan Chaudhary and Kopila Upretti (volleyball). Top three winners in both men and women’s volleyball won Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively while winners in kickboxing received Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 1,500. Likewise, top three winners in athletics, karate and taekwondo won Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 respectively. — HNS

Officials visit Cricket Academy site

KATHMANDU: Member secretary of National Sports Council (NSC) Jeevan Ram Shrestha, president of Cricket Association of Nepal Binay Raj Pandey and Local Development Officer of Kathmandu district Ganesh Gyawali visited the Cricket Academy site at Mulpani on Wednesday. Earlier, the officials had a meeting with Rajendra Pandey, Minister for Local Development, regarding the construction of the Academy building. International Cricket Council has provided $100,000 initially to CAN for the construction of the building. NSC said that the process of construction would begin by next month. — HNS
