MPC, TAC in final
HETEUDA: Mahendra Police Club (MPC) and Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) advanced to the men’s section final at the National Volleyball Tournament here on Monday. MPC edged out Armed Police Force Team 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 while the Armymen defeated Eastern Region 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 in the semi-finals. Earlier, Eastern Region beat Central Region for the semi-final berth. Likewise, Western Region defeated Eastern Region 22-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-21 and MPC outscored Eastern Region 25-22, 25-14, 28-26 in the women’s event. — HNS
Nepal finish second
KATHMANDU: Nepali team finished runners up in the Junior Baseball Club and Tournament held in Kolkata on April 27-29. Nepali team captain Arun Chaurasiya was adjudged the best fielder and Ali Raj Ansari was declared the best pitcher in the tournament, said All Nepal Baseball Association in a statement here on Monday. In all, 16 teams took part in the tournament, added the statement. — HNS
Dhakal appointed
KATHMANDU: The National Sports Council nominated Bhumiswor Dhakal as a member in its executive committee on Sunday. Dhakal hails from Western Region Sports Development Committee, said the NSC statement on Monday. Nomination of the members in the NSC from Eastern and Mid-western Region Sports Development Committee is yet to be done. Likewise, NSC has also formed Sports Development Committees in 15 districts — Siraha, Solukhumbhu, Udaypur, Saptari, Jhapa, Okhaldhunga, Panchthar, Kailali, Parbat, Mustang, Lamjung, Baglung, Tanahu, Jajarkot and Salyan. — HNS
Dick Motz dies
WELLINGTON: The first New Zealand bowler to take 100 Test wickets, Dick Motz, has died. Motz, 67, was found dead at home on Sunday in Christchurch by his former New Zealand captain Graham Dowling, The Press newspaper reported. The fast bowler played 32 Tests during the 1960s and took 19 wickets in South Africa on his first tour in 1961-62. He took five wickets in Test innings five times and scored three Test half centuries. He was New Zealand’s cricketer of the year in 1961 and a Wisden’s cricketer of the year in 1966. — AFP
