Kathmandu, May 22:

Development of information and communication technology has had its impact on astrology in Nepal as well.

After computers made inroads into the calculation of planetary positions and prediction of possible impacts, the same are undergoing a sea change with their degree of accuracy fast increasing. Astrologers, however, are well aware of the fact that around 90 per cent of the birth charts prepared in Nepal are faulty because they are based on fully conventional methods and calculations are faulty.

Dr Lok Raj Poudel, president of Astro-Council, Nepal, told this daily that there are more than 20,000 practicing astrologers in the country, but barely 200 of them are well educated and conversant.

“This situation clearly reflects why most of the birth charts are incorrect,” he said. “Astrology is all about mathematics and calculation, a simple error would lead to many wrong predictions. These errors can be checked by the use of proper computer software to make birth charts and prediction,” he said.

“Using software for supporting astrology has not gained popularity but over 60 astrologers across the nation are using it,” he said.

Raghu Nath Dhungel, a professional software developer, who has prepared astrology related Panchanga and Graha Gadana software said, “I developed astrology-related software for my personal research. Now some professional astrologers are using it and they say they are satisfied with it.”

“Use of computer software for astrological purpose will help Nepal’s astrology keep pace with the global development in science,” he said.

Professional astrologer Udaya Niraula, who is using an astrology software for astrological calculation, said, “Modern system of astrology is more practical and accurate. Software

developed to prepare birth charts are the most authentic and its use is the best option to get rid of the calculation errors.”
