Call to reopen schools
KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged all concerned, including the government, agitating students and school management, to expedite efforts to reopen the schools. “The closure of schools across the country has jeopardised the future of over 70 lakh children,” the human rights protection agency said in a press statement on Thursday. — HNS
NHRC staff’s demand
KATHMANDU: Officials of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday met leaders of different political parties and urged the latter to expedite efforts to appoint NHRC commissioners. The NHRC officials held separate meetings with Nepali Congress (NC) vice-president Sushil Koirala, general secretary of the NC Ram Baran Yadav, general secretary of the Nepal Sadbhavana Party (Anandidevi) Hridayesh Tripathi, and president of the Janamorchan Nepal Amik Sherchan. The leaders of the political parties promised to take initiatives to fill the posts lying vacant in the National Human Rights Commission. — HNS
THT chapter of FNJ
Kathmandu: A meeting of journalists working with The Himalayan Times (THT) has formed the THT chapter of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists. The association was registered with the FNJ on May 21, a statement issued by the THT chapter said on Thursday. The 13-member ad-hoc committee is headed by Rekha Shrestha, while Razen Manandhar and Hem Dulal are its vice-presidents. While Akanshya Shah Rana, Indra Gurung and Ananta Raj Luitel have been selected secretary, joint secretary and treasurer respectively, the members are Arjun Bhandari, Ishwor Khanal, Mudita Bajracharya, Mahesh Acharya, Krishna Bahadur Karki, Rajesh Gurung and Rukmangat Aryal. —HNS
Deuba off to China
KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (Democratic) president and former prime minister, Sher Bahadur Deuba, left for China on Thursday. Governor of the Sichuan province, Zhang Zhong Wei, has invited Deuba to visit China. Deuba will visit the Chendu University and Guilin, and also attend the eighth Western China International Economic and Trade Fair, the party said on Thursday. — HNS
