VDC chairman shot dead

GAIGHAT: Maoists shot dead chairman of Sirise VDC, Karna Bahadur Shrestha, on Saturday evening. Police said around 15 Maoists shot him in the chest while on his way to Katari-Dhurmi road where repair work is going on. Shrestha was appointed VDC chairman two months ago and had been warned by Maoists to resign. — HNS

Blast in school

CHITWAN: Maoists detonated a bomb in Little Flower School at Naughare of Bharatpur Municipality-4 at 5 pm on Sunday. Father Wilson said the building was slightly damaged. Likewise, Maoists torched a truck belonging to Surya Tobacco Company at 2 pm on Sunday at Barauji Chowk of Patihani VDC-5. Fire destroyed the truck and the cigarettes it was carrying. Locals said two Maoists asked the driver and the helper to vacate the truck before torching it. Maoists have taken responsibility for the blast and have seized cash from the vehicle. — HNS

Scribe’s wife ‘abducted’

LAHAN: Mithilesh Kumar Yadav, a journalist at a local media house, has said his wife was abducted on Saturday night and has blamed his wife Deepa Thakur’s family for the act. A resident of Lahan-4, Yadav had an intercaste marriage with Deepa of Pokharminda VDC-6. The Yadav couple had demanded police protection from Deepa’s family which had vehemently disapproved of the marriage. Inspector Mahesh Bhattarai of the Area Police Office, Lahan, said Yadav has filed a complaint about the ‘abduction’, adding the police were trying to contact Deepa and her family. — HNS

Lawyers’ forum for rights

Kathmandu: The three-day South Asian Law Schools’ conference concluded issuing a Kathmandu declaration which set up a South Asian Law Schools’ Forum for Human Rights. The meet also laid emphasis on comprehensive reform of the legal education system in the region. “This forum will work to promote consistent development of regional human rights jurisprudence through active participation of faculties by developing common understanding on human rights issues, curriculum of the universities and teaching methodologies,” states the declaration. — HNS

DANG: Experts have said the holding of elections in the country is impossible unless the ongoing conflict between the government and Maoists is resolved. Speaking at an interaction held by civic society, Lamahi, participants stressed the need to initiate peace processes by giving continuity to the Hapure peace talks to provide an outlet to the present impasse. — RSS

Students abducted

BHOJPUR: More than 80 teachers and students of Dalgaun and Bhulke VDCs of Bhojpur district were abducted from the schools by armed Maoists a few days ago. The teachers and students, who were abducted saying they would be released in few days after participating in a Maoist programme, have not been released yet, local people said. — RSS

Woman dies of injuries

NAWALPARASI: Dhan Maya Pariyar, 40, of Chilaha, Shiva Mandir-8, who was injured when she was hit by a truck, died in Bharatpur while undergoing treatment on Sunday afternoon. Pariyar was hit by the truck at Kawasoti Bazaar on Sunday morning, and was taken to Kaligandaki hospital, Kawasoti, and then to Bharatpur hospital. — HNS

99 reservoirs built

TANSEN: Construction of reservoirs to collect rain water in three wards of Telgha VDC, Palpa, has concluded. A total of 99 reservoirs have been constructed in 79 households under the project. — RSS
