Leeds, September 2:

India won the fifth one-day international at Headingley here on Sunday by 38 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis (D/L)method and so reduced England’s lead in the seven-match series to 3-2.

England, initially chasing 325, lost three wickets for seven runs in 13 balls, including Kevin Pietersen (0), as they slumped to 104-4. After rain stopped play midway through the 17th over, England found a revised target of 311 in 45 overs. And when rain finally forced an end to the match England were well short of the D/L par score on 242-8 off 39 overs. England captain Paul Collingwood was 91 not out.

India, sent into bat, scored 324-6, their third highest ODI total against England. Yuvraj Singh top-scored with 72. Sachin Tendulkar made 71 and with Sourav Ganguly (59) put on 116 for the first wicket. Gautam Gambhir, brought in to bolster India’s batting after left-arm quick Rudra Pratap Singh was dropped, scored 51 batting at No 3 and added 94 for the third wicket with Yuvraj.

Fast bowler Stuart Broad, man-of-the-match in Thursday’s three-wicket win at Old Trafford, conceded 84 runs from his 10 overs on Sunday. The series continues at The Oval on Wednesday.
