One killed in mishap

RUPANDEHI: One student was killed and 27 others injured when a jeep heading to Butwal carrying students turned turtle at Shitalnagar of Devdaha, a section of Mahendra Highway, on Sunday. Students of different schools were in jeep to attend the 17th district conference of All Nepal National Independent Students Union- Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) in Butwal. Tulasiram Chapagain, 14, a eight grader of Bhabisyanirman Secondary School was killed. Of the 27 injured, the condition of Rupak Kafle, 16 and Chitra Kumar Thapa,

15, is reported to be critical, Butwal Area Police Office said. — HNS

JE claims three

MAHENDRANAGAR: Three persons have died of Japanese encephalitis in Kanchanpur district. Two patients admitted at the Mahakali zonal hospital died on Saturday, the hospital source said. Eight-year-old Shanker Saud of Chandani village development committee-3 and 47-year-old Fulpati Chaudhary of Beldandi VDC-2 of Kanchanpur district died while undergoing treatment. Earlier, 13-year-old Ramesh Chaudhary of Mahendranagar-12 died of encephalitis on August 29. — HNS

MP falls unconscious

KATHMANDU: Parliamentarian from the Janamorcha Nepal, Ganesh Saha, fell unconscious on Sunday afternoon during the meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee. Saha suddenly fell unconscious when the full meeting was going on for the hearing of Kedar Prasad Giri for the post of chief justice. Parliamentarian Saha is undergoing treatment at the Bir Hospital. — RSS

KATHMANDU: Prince Paras’ health is stable on the fourth day of his hospitalisation at the Norvic-Escorts International Hospital, a press statement issued by the hospital on Sunday said. Prince Paras had been admitted to the hospital after he suffered from a heart attack on September 6. He will be observed in the CCU of the hospital, the press statement said. — RSS

Mother kills children

RAUTAHAT: A mother killed her two children at Mathiya VDC-6 on Saturday night by poisoning them. Chanda Devi, wife of Raj Kishor Raut, killed her two children — 3-year-old daughter Anjali and 18 month-old daughter Kaski Kumari — by feeding them poison, the Rautahat district police office said, adding she also tried to kill her ‘self’ by consuming poison later. Locals said that torture meted out by her family members led her to do so. Chanda was arrested, SP Yogeshwor Romkhami said. — HNS

One killed in mishap

TANAHUN: One Bhaskar Sharma, 31, a resident of Shivgunj-9 of Jhapa was killed when the motorcycle he was riding on met with an accident at Bandipur-6 on the Prithvi Highway on Saturday night. Sharma, an employee of the United Nations, was heading for Pokhara from Kathmandu and died on the spot, the police said. Pillion rider Lalit Adhikari who was injured in the incident is undergoing treatment in Manipal Teaching Hospital, the police said, adding that the body has been taken to Damauli Hospital for post-mortem. — HNS

Toll from landslides 5

POKHARA: The death toll in the landslide at Sedibagar in Sarkangkot VDC 7 of Kaski district reached five on Sunday. Sher Bahadur Nepali, 45, of Sedibagar who was injured in the landslide that occurred on Friday died while undergoing treatment at Pokhara Western Region Hospital. Earlier, four persons died on the spot when the landslide hit Sedibagar and Gyarajati in Sarangkot village development committee. Over 48 families were displaced. — HNS

KATHMANDU: Minister for Information and Communications, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, on Sunday stressed on the need for Press freedom for national development.
