House collapse kills 1

SIRAHA: One child was killed when a hut in a dalit settlement at Khoriyatole of Chandra Ayodyapur VDC collapsed on Thursday. “Seven-year-old Laxminiya Mahara, daughter of Parmeshwor, was killed when my hut collapsed”, a local Jaya Lal said. Six houses of the Dalits collapsed due to heavy rains, locals said, adding that the homeless are taking shelter in a local primary school. — HNS

Late MP’s final rites

KAPILVASTU: The final rites of late MP Ajaya Pratap Shah were performed at Suraina River in Kapilvastu on Thursday. RPP chairman Pashupati SJB Rana paid tribute to late Shah by draping his body with the party flag. RPP central member Shah died while undergoing treatment of kidney and lung diseases in Lucknow of India on Wednesday. Former ministers Brijesh Kumar Gupta, Birendra Kanaudiya and Krishna Chaudhari took part in the funeral. — HNS

Woman, kid die in fire

BARA: A pregnant woman and her three-year-old daughter were burnt to death after their house caught fire at Dharmanagar-6 in the district on Thursday morning. Birendra Shah’s wife Sumitra Godit and the baby girl died in the fire that caught the house at around 08:00 am, said a local resident, Rajeshwor Prasad Chaurasia. Other members of the family were not home when the incident occurred, another local resident said. Investigation is on, police said. — HNS

Jailbirds’ stir on

BIRGUNJ: Inmates in the Birgunj prison continued their agitation for the second day on Thursday. They organised a ‘torch protest’ inside the prison for an hour as part of their scheduled phase-wise protest programmes. The jailbirds are seeking general amnesty. — HNS

Two electrocuted

DHADING: Two sisters were electrocuted in Tileghar of Naubise village development committee ward No-5 in Dhading district on Thursday. Saru KC, 17, and Sita KC, 9, were returning home after collecting fodder when they happened to step on a wet patch of land around an electric pole from where the electric current was leaking. — HNS
