Chance to come clean

The nation has been paying a heavy price for the dishonesty of the political parties. Take for instance the CPN-UML, one of the major parties in the alliance, which has written a note of dissent on the issue of proportional representation system, but at the same time signing the existing agreement. The UML also claims that it was in favour of referendum on the monarchy, but gave approval to the Interim Constitution without any provision of referendum. Leaders like Madhav Kumar Nepal and his communist friends need to understand their duty towards the nation and Nepalis before making any excuses for not being able to take an

unwavering stand on questions of national interest. The current political situation gives them an excellent opportunity to prove themselves and they would be wise not to miss it.

Errors

This is in reference to the news report “Poll deferral opposed” (THT, Oct. 15). We would like to inform that it was National Alliance of Women Human Rights Defenders (NAWHRD) that staged a sit-in at Maitighar Mandala and not Women Rights Activists (WORAC) National Network as has been mentioned in the report. Likewise, it was NAWHRD that said that the government’s decision to defer the CA polls violated people’s right to defend themselves. In addition, Dr Renu Raj Bhandari is the co-ordinator of NAWHRD and not chairwoman

as reported.

Good piece

This refers to Safal Gautam’s Midway “Take it seriously” (THT, Oct. 16). I would like to thank the writer for writing something that encourages people not to look down on professions other than medicine and engineering. I agree with the author that no profession is inferior or

superior, but we must have the commitment to do the best in any profession we choose to pursue. You should encourage people to think out of the box and write pieces with fresh ideas.

PM should go

It was not long ago that Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had said that should he fail to hold the CA polls within the stipulated time, he would resign. However, though the polls have now been postponed indefinitely, he doesn’t seem to have accepted his failure. It is the moral responsibility of the PM to honour his public promise. He should make way for other politicians who are better suited for the purpose.

Unsafe

This refers to the news report “One more city child kidnapped, slain” (THT, Oct. 16). Despite government claims that the security situation in the country has improved, the gruesome murder of yet another child in the capital evidences the rising incidents of abductions, extortions and murders across the country.

The security agencies have failed to maintain law and order. If the seven party government

is incapable of giving the people a sense of security, there is no reason why it should remain

in power.
