What’s fixed?

Kathmandu, November 20: The 750-metre road from Dillibazaar-Pipalbot via Ghattekulo chowk to Anamnagar chowk that was in total ruin with large potholes for years has recently been blacktopped on the initiative of locals.

The road that was first blacktopped eight years ago had no trace of the blacktop in the recent years. It was full of large potholes and it used to look like open gutter, specially during the rainy season.

The route is one of the busiest inner-city roads in Kathmandu and any kind of vehicles including school buses, small tractors and private buses ply on it. “The damaged road had troubled everyone,” said Sampurna Karki, a local. “The repair and maintenance has relieved all of us; it is comfortable to move now.”

The Ghattekulo Development Committee (GDC), a committee of locals chaired by Raju Aryal, took initiative to repair and maintain the road. The 12 feet road was repaired with 90 per cent financial assistance from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and 10 per cent local contribution. The total cost of the construction was Rs 1.7 million.

Who is responsible?

The condition of the road was too appaling it was a matter of distress and disgrace to both

the residents and the KMC. With the support of the KMC we repaired the road. Though people were reluctant to contribute money in the beginning, everyone is happy now.
