Toys containing lead destroyed

By Agencies

Thousands of toys in Mexico have been destroyed following worries that they contain dangerous chemicals. Toy company Mattel sent them to the crusher after finding out they had harmful levels of a metal called lead. The toys included racing cars, action figures and plastic dragons. They will now be recycled and made into fuel.

Earlier this year, loads of other toys - some of them also from Mattel - were taken off the shelves following concerns that they were unsafe. Mattel got more than 21 million Chinese-made toys returned because it was worried about lead levels as well as tiny magnets in the products that kids could accidentally swallow.

And this week toy makers JSSY Ltd in Hong Kong said sorry when several kids got ill after swallowing toxic toy beads.
