Biratnagar, February 29:
Central member of the Nepali Congress (NC) Mahesh Acharya today said the abolishment of monarchy alone will not make the people fully sovereign.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the Morang chapter of Nepal Press Union, he said the NC, with view to making the people fully sovereign, would forward a proposal on forming a government of national consensus in the first meeting of the to-be-elected Constituent Assembly.
“Even if the NC gets majority in the polls, the party is not of the view of forming a single-party government,” he said.
He said the federal regions should be formed on the basis of geography, economics and the ground realities of the respective regions.
Saying that the NC has forwarded a proposal for adopting a three-tier system of government in the future federal system, he said the NC has given equal importance to central government, regional governments and local autonomous governments.
Acharya said the process for building a new Nepal has already begun and the government should adopt maximum flexibility while dealing with the agitators. He underscored the need to bring the armed forces in the Tarai to the negotiating table.
On an query, Acharya said the talks about country’s future president are meaningless, as the country is yet to decide on what kind of system it will adopt in the future.
He ruled out chances of the NC making an electoral alliance with the new parties formed in the Tarai. “Rather, we will have friendly competition with them.”
