Kathmandu, March 5:

Stress was laid here today on sincere following of traffic rules and self-discipline on the part of the public to reduce traffic jams in the Valley.

“All citizens who use the roads should be aware of traffic rules and follow them sincerely, taking into account that their self-discipline can prevent themselves from accidents and minimise traffic jam on City streets,” said Prem Bahadur Malla, DSP at the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division.

Speaking at an interaction on ‘problem of traffic jams and alternatives to reduce them’, Malla said: “Core roads in the Valley were originally designed to run horse-carts. Lack of infrastructure, added to poor enforcement of law and poor traffic education system, are the main causes for traffic jams on the City roads,” he said.

Representatives of transport entrepreneurs’ associations agreed that the rise in the number of vehicles as one of the reasons for traffic jams in the City.

Dhanpati Sapkota of Kathmandu Metropolitan City blamed unplanned urbanisation for recurring traffic jams.
