MIDWAY : Overriding concern

MIDWAY : Overriding concern

By Uday Lama

An overriding concern’ is one that merits close attention to the exclusion of others. This becomes in the due process something that gnaws deep down inside. And one to attend to in all its details and specifications. Because of its nature a concern turns into a must as far as it is concerned.

When this happens lesser considerations may soon fade away into something insignificant, while it becomes the task of utmost significance. Nothing is so guaranteed to focus the concern with the self and earmark it into a position of prominence — allowing for an in-depth analysis and serious introspection.

A concern may have a multiplier effect on one’s actions and is also a cause for due motivation. Its ethical and legal aspects could lead to its increasing importance in the scheme of things and act as a pivotal force.

It also serves as an excuse to make things work out as it may take the form of a sticky problem to be solved or an imprtant deadline to meet. Whenever there is something to be said or done immediately, then, naturally enough, other interests are shunted aside to make enough room for it.

And it assumes a prerogative of its own. The need is to identify it at the outset and link it to whatever is of importance which leads to its establishment as a milestone in one’s life.

Of concern could be the approaching date for an examination or a business deal in the offing to make up a large part of one’s life tuning out other considerations. Because it continues to override other factors it becomes something to dwell upon.

It invariably assumes proportions according to its status. More than anything else, what is a growing problem could be due to its proximity. Finding a solution to it can make it less demanding and lead to relief. The immediate resolution allows for it to lessen its impact upon the psyche and turn it into a manifestation of sorts.

To wit, a concern may gather momentum of its own accord and assume a larger than life form. So a straightforward, proactive approach at the outset is the only way to tackle it.

In the process it loses much steam and leverage and the power to effect changes. Only by giving into it will a discernible impact be made.
