Merdeka Cup

KATHMANDU: Nepal will take on Afghanistan in the do-or-die match at the Merdeka Cup Football Tournament in Kuala Lumpur on Friday. After a 4-0 loss to hosts Malaysia on Wednesday, Nepal will have win the match to stay alive in the tournament. The Afghani team in Malaysia is the same Under-13 side that lost to Nepal in the 2006 South Asian Games in Sri Lanka. In senior level also, Nepal beat Afghanistan in the Asia Cup qualifying in Kathmandu in 2003. — HNS

Taekwondo C’ship

Reliance International Academy is organising the Reliance International School Invitational Taekwondo Championship in Kathmandu from Friday. A total of 104 players — 79 in men’s and 25 in women’s sections — are taking part in 19 weight categories. Apart from hosts Reliance, Nepal ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams, Lily Flowers School, and Nitin Memorial School from Nepal, India’s Rain International, Bishwo Bharati and Delhi Public School are taking part in the championship. — HNS

Shrestha off to Bali

KATHMANDU: Member Secretary of National Sports Council (NSC) and General Secretary of Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) Jeevan Ram Shrestha and NOC President Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan left for Indonesia to take part in the 27th General Assembly of Olympic Council of Asia to be held in Bali from October 18-22. Meanwhile, the bodybuilding players Shyam Shrestha, Biru Maharjan, Gyan Narayan Maharjan and coach Rajendra Tuladhar also left for Bali to participate in the first Asian Beach Games. — HNS
