Newars seek Valley in future federal set up

Kathmandu, January 16:

The Joint Action Committee for Newa Autonomous State today handed over its ‘political concept paper’ to vice-chairperson of Constituent Assembly (CA), demanding to declare Kathmandu Valley as a ‘Newar State’ in the future federal Nepal.

“While the state restructuring takes place, we demand declaration of the Kathmandu Valley as a Newar autonomous region,” said Malla K Sundar, member of the committee and president of Newa:

Dea Dabu.

Malla said they submitted their concept paper to vice chairperson Purna Kumari Subedi and CA member Nilambar Acharya. He claimed that they were positive on their demand and assured them of consideration of the concept paper during the state restructuring process.

According to the concept paper, the Newa state should be ensured with the religious, social, cultural, political and financial rights and with the right to self determination. It also demands Newar’s inclusion in policy making and social, economic and educational sectors.

Sujib Bajracharya, member of the committee and president of Newa: Jagaran Manch, said that it was the first time that the Newars came peacefully forward to ensure their rights from the CA. Malla claimed that some 50,000 people participated in the peaceful rally that started from Basantapur Durbar Square to CA hall, New Baneshwor, today.
