RAMECHHAP: Goma Devi Khatri, 75, a resident of Bijulikot VDC in Ramechhap district, has been thrashed by her family on the charge of being a witch. According to the victim, her husband Jagat Bahadur Khatri, his second wife Methimaya and father-in-law Pahalman beat her up on Tuesday accusing her of practising witchcraft. “My husband, after his second marriage, along with others of the family, has been torturing me calling me a witch for the past 22 years,” Goma said. She said she was usually beaten thrice in a month. Tuesday’s beating had rendered her unconscious. She has sustained injuries on head and back. “The neighbours have followed suit to call me a witch,” Goma lamented, adding Jagat and Methimaya had attempted to make her eat human feces. “I had to spend several nights in the forest as they forced me to leave the house,” she said. The old lady today approached Manthali, the district headquarters, seeking justice without eating anything for two days for lack of money. “They entered my room and took away goods and edibles though I have been living separately for over two decades,” she said. She filed an appeal in DAO Ramechhap seeking action against the guilty. “We will probe into the incident and take necessary action,” CDO Jitendra Bahadur Bhandari said.
