Kathmandu, April 17: Rabi Khadka won the Golfer Pilots NPGA Classic to clinch the first major career title here at the Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) today. The RNGC pro Khadka carded three-over 70 for a total of six-over 217 to register a two-stroke victory over fellow clubmate and overnight leader Deepak Thapa Magar. Dubai-based Purna Sharma finished third at 220. Dharan pro Mani Rai carded four-over 71 to finish fourth with the score of 222, while RNGC pro Ramesh Nagarkoti slipped to tied fifth with Nepal No 1 player Shiva Ram Shrestha at 223. Nagarkoti was joint second after the second round, while Shiva Ram climbed up from ninth to share the fifth position. Rajan Thapa, Ram Thapa and Sanjay Lama completed the top 10 in the Surya Nepal Golf Tour opener that was played in three different venues -- Gokarna Golf Club, Tribhuvan Army Officers' Golf Club and RNGC. Out of the total cash prize of Rs 200,000, Rabi Khadka earned Rs 46,000, while Deepak Thapa Magar received Rs 31,000 and Purna Sharma got 23,000. Others in the top 15 also get their share of cash prizes. 'The win has given me lots of confidence,' said Rabi Khadka, who has neven won a pro title despite coming close on couple of occasions. 'The 14th hole was the turning point of the match and luckily I was the one who benifitted the most,' said Khadka, who was second behind Shiva Ram in last year's Samsung Match Play and CMS Cup. 'I played it cautiously on the last hole as I was aware that I can win if I get it on the right spot,' he added. Thapa Magar started the final day with one stroke lead over fellow RNGC team-mates Rabi Khadka and Ramesh Nagarkoti. He extended the lead to two strokes after the completion of the front nine and maintained the lead till the 13th hole. The match turned upside down after Thapa Magar had a double par at the par-three 14th hole. Khadka took a one-shot lead after he had a par-putt on that hole. The next hole saw Rabi Khadka surviving by a whisker as his tee shot stayed just one-foot inside the boundary and he managed a bogey while Thapa Magar caught the leader with a par-putt. They went neck-to-neck and the match was decided on the last hole where Thapa Magar ran out of his luck. Rabi found the lower side of the torturous 18th green of RNGC where Thapa Mager hit it short failing to chip up to the green on the third shot dropping two shots on the par-four hole. Rabi had easy time for a two-putt par to win his first career title since turning pro in December 2007. On the front nine, Khadka shot a birdie against a bogey and a double bogey. His back nine score of one-over 35 included eight par-putts against a single bogey. Thapa Magar carded a birdie and a bogey on the front nine, while his back score of six-over 40 included a bogey, a double bogey and a double par. 'Everything changed after the 14th hole,' said Thapa Magar, who not only dropped three shots on the par-three hole but also fell behind Rabi. 'It was just bad luck that I could not reach the green with the third shot,' said the Nepal No 2 player. First-round leader Purna Sharma, who came all the way from Dubai for the next week's Surya Nepal Masters, finished third at nine-over 220. Sharma, the younger brother of Gokarna Golf Club pro Pashupati, shot two-under 70 in the first round at Gokarna but had a forgottable day carding six-over 78 at the Army course on Thursday. He shot three-over 70 today. Nepal No 1 player Shiva Ram and Nagarkoti finished tied fifth at 223. Nagarkoti slipped two spots down while Shiva Ram climbed four spots up after a round of 76 and 69 respectively. In amateur section, Rupak Acharya, who was 11 strokes behind leader Puskar Rajbahak, carded five-over 72 for a total of 237 to win the title. Prasanna Upreti came second at 238, while Rajbahak shot 21-over 88 to finish third. Nepal Airlines Corporation pilot and one of the sponsors of the event Nar Narayan Thapaliya, NPGA President Rabindra Man Shrestha, RNGC president Madhukar Yakthumba, former NPGA president Ghana Shyam Thapa, RNGC and NGA Vice President Prachanda Bahadur Shrestha, Kathmandu District NGA President Madan Rana and tournament committee chairman of RNGC Maj NK Rai gave away prizes to the winners.
