Govt has authority to question CoAS: Yadav

KATHMANDU: Madhesi People's Rights Forum (MPRF) today said the government had the authority to seek clarification from Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Rookmangud Katawal. Talking to reporters after the party's parliamentary meeting, MPRF president Upendra Yadav said, "There is a legal provision to seek clarification from the CoAS." He, however, said army shouldn't be politicised. The parliamentary meeting also directed lawmakers to focus on the task of constitution writing. MPRF is yet to publicise its official stance on the CoAS case. But MPRF ministers did not attend today's cabinet meeting. Meanwhile, Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) met President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and discussed the current political impasse. In the meeting, party leaders informed the President about their stance on the army issue. Talking to this daily, Hridayesh Tripathi said, "We don't agree with the government decision of querying the CoAS. It's irrelevant." "The issue should be settled through a political consensus. It shouldn't affect the peace process," Tripathi quoted President Yadav as saying. The President is also said to have raised legal issues regarding the government move.
