Dalit women cry for equal representation

KATHMANDU: Dalit women on Friday demanded the government to ensure their rights in the new constitution and urged for special plans and policies to uplift and empower Dalit women. Feminists Dalit Organisation (FEDO) on Friday publicised their declarations organising an interaction in the capital. Durga Sob, president of FEDO said that Dalit women were discriminated by the so called high castes and were accused constantly of practicing witchcraft. She demanded the representation of Dalit women in the formulation of public policies and law, and their implementation and monitoring. She stressed for their proportional representation in the new constitution and said that the state should take initiation for ending every type of discrimination against them. “The government should bring a special package to ensure the social, economical, political, administrative and cultural rights of the Dalit people,” claimed Sob, adding that there wasn’t any need of a separate federal state for Dalit community. Similarly, Dhan Kumari Sunar, member of National Women’s Commission urged the government to ensure educational, health and employment rights to the Dalit people. She also said that women from Badi community should be given special reservation ending every type of discrimination. “The superstitious beliefs and cultural practices among them should be ended and the state should give special attention to the Badi community,” viewed Sunar. She also emphasised on the representation of Dalit women in public and private organisations saying that programmes to uplift and empower Dalit community should be free of cost. Sunar also demanded the government to sign the international convention against discrimination against women even if they were implemented or not.
