KATHMANDU: The price of boiler chicken has broken all previous records in Kathmandu Valley, adding to consumers. A kilogramme of chicken meat is being sold for between Rs 250 and Rs 260 currently in the market. Till three months ago, the price was just Rs 95 per kilogramme. The current price of chicken meat has become almost equal to what the price of mutton was a year ago. Not only chicken, the price of eggs has also registered a dramatic increase of 140 per cent, with an egg at Rs 8. Poultry farmers attribute the rise in prices to short supply of chicken due to closure of poultry farms in Nepal because of bird flu threat. They blame worsening supply situation, volatile markets and high cost of chicken feed are to blame.
