NMA to fight for climbers’ rights, dues

By Himalayan News Service

KATHMANDU: Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) today organised the first special meet for climbers to address the woes and difficulties they are encountering professionally. For months, NMA has been trying to counter the causes that lead to dissatisfaction and discontentment among hundreds of mountain climbers. These climbers help mountaineers to scale many difficult peaks and many climbers lose their lives due to professional hazards. The fee structure for these climbers is very basic and compensation to their families when a death occurs is next to nothing. Security, as far as insurance goes, is also minimal. Hence, NMA has stepped forward to help these climbers fight for their rights. Speaking about the perils faced by climbers, representative Devendra Purush Dhakal said, “The government has not provided any relief to these people, or supplies to climbers’ families.” While mountaineering in Nepal generates a lot of revenue in royalty fees to the government, not even a fraction has been used to provide relief to those who help generate that royalty. Discussing this issue, CA member Shanta Chaudhary said, “Efforts have to be made to raise the issue strongly and rights have to be fought for. I will do what it takes to raise this issue in the Constituent Assembly in order that provisions be made for climbers.”
