KATHMANDU: Nepal Golf Association (NGA) has selected four golfers today for the 11th South Asian Games to be held in January 29 to February 9 in Dhaka next year. Top four players - Rupak Acharya, Tashi Ghale, Tashi Tsering and Bishnu Sharma - secured the berths for the regional tournament after the three rounds of play. Royal Nepal Golf Course hosted the first round, Tribhuvan Army Officers Golf Club (TAOGC) the second and the Gokarna Forest Golf Club the final round here today. Played on stroke play format with a single handicap allowance, Gokarna Club amateur Acharya won the qualifier despite carding seven over 79 in the final round here today. Acharya topped the qualifier with a total score of 12-over 228. He had a card of three-over 75 at the RNGC and two-over 74 at the Army course. Ghale, who is also the general secretary of the NGA, finished five strokes behind Acharya at 233. Ghale shot four-over 76, the best he had managed in three rounds. Ghale had a score of six-over 78 at the RNGC and seven-over 79 at the TAOGC. After disappointing rounds at the RNGC (84) and TAOGC (80), Tsering bounced back to secure the qualification, sharing the best card of the day with Ghale at four-over 76. Tsering ended with a total score of 24-over 240. Bishnu Sharma earned the fourth and final spot for the regional games despite shooting 13-over 85 here today. Sharma had started the qualifier with the best card of two-over 74 at the RNGC in the 18-man field before losing momentum at the TAOGC with a card of 83. Meanwhile, NGA general secretary said that the qualifier was also the basis to determine the rankings of the Nepali amateur golfers. 'Since we don't have amateur Tour, the event is one of the two tournaments which will decide the rankings of the golfers,' said Ghale. The NGA general secretary said that the top 10 players now get certain points going into the Surya Nepal Western Open. Points earned in the Western Open will finally decide the rankings of the amateur golfers.
