Koches demand Kochila their way, warn of bloodshed

ITAHARI: Leaders of indigenous community in the 'Kochila Pradesh' have warned of sanguinary war if only Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa districts were declared ‘Kochila state’ as per the claim of UCPN-Maoist. They have demanded that Ilam be included too. Speakers at a programme organised by Kochila Autonomous State Council, a pressure group for Kochila state, issued the warning today. The UCPN-Maoist had announced that they would declare Kochila state on December 11. The indigenous leaders opined that autonomous states should be guaranteed on the basis of caste and historical background as per the wishes of the locals of Kochila. Meche leader, Chandan Meche said that they wanted Kochila state for Jhapa, Ilam, Morang and Sunsari districts at any cost. He said that the political leaders, including of the UCPN-Maoist, have been duping the indigenous residents of Kochila region and added they were ready for any kind of struggle to realise their demand. Bijayasingh Khawas said that federal states as per the wishes of the political parties would not be acceptable. Haren Prasad Tajpuriya, president Kochila State Council Jhapa, said the Kochila state should be declared on the basis of caste and historical background. The speakers vented their ire saying the janajatis were used as ladders by the political parties. Rajbanshi leader, Kaluram Rajbanshi blamed the UCPN-Maoist of conspiring by distorting real history of Kochila. He warned of armed struggle if their demand were not met. Arjun Rajbanshi of the council said that the Koches had been ruling from east of Koshi River to Bhutan for thousands of years. He demanded to separate Kochila state boundary on that basis. Meanwhile, executive president of the struggle committee Lekhraj Khawas vowed to establish four districts as Kochila state. He said they had also prepared 1,000 quasi-military Kochila state guards for armed struggle if necessary. He also demanded full proportional system in each bodies of the federal state, fully implementation of ILO 169 and guarantee of autonomous Kochila state on caste based historical background. Chief guest Upendra Gachhadar, president Democratic Socialist Party said his party would support the agitation of the indigenous people. Mukti Rajbanshi of the council and central memeber Tharu Rastriya Mukti Morcha Amanlal Modi also aired their opinion. The programme was attended by hundreds of people hailing from Morang, Sunsari, Jhapa and Ilam.
