Minister admits error
LALITPUR: Minister for Industry Asta Laxmi Shakya admitted that policies and programmes introduced to protect the rights of workers could not be implemented fully. Inaugurating the national counselling meeting on ‘Forced labour in Nepal’ organised by the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) here on Thursday, she said settling of the problems faced by workers of unorganised sectors was really a challenging task. She said though forced labour is already banned in Nepal, it is still in practice. She urged workers’ rights activists and the government to work to stop it. — RSS
Waling Festival
WALING: Visitors are thronging here to see the kundule ghar (round shaped house) and enjoy boating, the central attractions of the ongoing Waling Festival-2065 in Syangja. Festival committee coordinator Yam Bahadur Gurung said more people were visiting the festival to see the Kundule Ghar, round shaped house, and go boating in an artificial lake made by blocking Aadhikhola. Kundule ghar, built by ex-army men, is on the verge of extinction. Some 2,000 visitors come daily for boating and around 1500 to see the kundule ghar. — RSS
Agreement reached
CHAUTARA: An agreement has been reached to resume work on the 50-MW Balefi Hydroelectricity Project in Sindhupalchowk. The investors had stopped work seven days ago, citing security reasons. An all-side meeting of political parties, local administration, project officials and locals reached a four-point agreement under which a bridge will be built over Labdukhola in Golche VDC and additional services provided to the VDC. t. Parties, administration and locals will cooperate with the project and work to stop extortion of project personnel. The project will cost Rs 6.5 billion. India’s Bhilabar Energy invested 33 per cent while Nepal’s Tribeni Group has invested 67 per cent in the project. Project MD Bhanu Pokharel said that it would be completed in three to five years. — RSS
