Sugarcane farming :

BIRGUNJ: Experts have stressed on the need to effectively implement a long-term strategy for the development and extension of sugarcane farming. They demanded a National Sugarcane and Sugar Development Board for the development and promotion of the crop at a meeting on ‘coordination of the concerned bodies for sugarcane research and development’ organised here on Thursday by the Sugarcane Research Programme, Jitpur Bara. They called

for research of hybrid sugarcane seed with quality and low cost, and managers of sugar mills said they would extend all possible help for the research. — RSS

Budget made public :

BIRATNAGAR: The 13th town council of the Biratnagar sub-metropolis has made public a budget of Rs 243.2 million for the fiscal year 2063-64 BS. The budget has Rs 49.8 million in general expenditure and Rs 33 million in social development and Rs 160.3 million in physical infrastructure building. — RSS

GM products banned :

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) not to give approvals to genetically modified products until further orders. A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justices C K Thakker and R V Raveendran gave the direction on an application filed by Aruna Rodrigues and three others in a public interest litigation seeking a ban on the release of genetically modified organisms/seeds having the potential of causing major health hazards.—HNS
