Baglung, February 13
Rural areas in Baglung district, which is considered as a pocket area for orange cultivation, is facing a crisis due to the lack of a proper market for orange sale.
Farmers in this region have a long experience in growing oranges. They started growing oranges in 2037 BS after they were trained in horticulture and modern ways of cultivation. Even after working very hard and growing oranges according to modern methods, their hard work have paid them well enough. Oranges these days are being sold at a very low price.
Even though oranges are grown in large amounts at Tityang, Bhakunde, Sigana, Pala, Bihu, Lekhani and Belva, Deupur, Mallag and Dhairi, oranges are unable to get a proper market due to lack of proper market management.
Farmers are compelled to sell their harvest during the season. This leads to unhealthy competition as oranges are sold at a minimal price.
The main reason for this disparity is the lack of a cold storage facility. Farmers have demanded for a place to store and process oranges with the related government department.
