Earning livelihood on sandy river bank

Bardiya, May 1:

Two Indian nationals have started vegetable farming on the banks of Bhada River situated some two kilometre east of Gulariya Bazaar. Vegetables such as gourd, pumpkin, bitter gourd and tomatoes are being cultivated on the sandy river bank.

The vegetable farming in the Bhada river bank has become a centre of attraction for people, says Dinesh Yadav, a local of Gulariya. “People cannot believe when they see vegetables being grown on the river bank even during this dry season,” he adds. Vegetable is cultivated in 15 bighas of barren land. An Indian national, Inar Tulla, 60, of Baraelli in India started vegetable farming along the Bhada river bank. He claims to earn up to Rs 4,000 a day by selling the vegetables grown here. Mostly, the vegetable retailers from Gulariya, Bhurigaun, Baansgadhi, Taratal and Nepalgunj buy the vegetables, he adds.

Mohammad Yusuf of Baraelli in India has been also growing vegetables on the bank of the same river. He claims that he earns about Rs 3,000 daily from the sale of the vegetables.
