KATHMANDU, MAY 31
The price of eggs has gone up due to a drop in production caused by rising temperatures, coupled with increased demand.
The Nepal Layers Poultry Breeders Association on Friday set new prices effective immediately: Rs 480 per crate (30 pieces) for XL eggs, Rs 465 for large, and Rs 435 for medium-sized eggs.
Chairperson Binod Pokharel said the price hike offers some relief to farmers, though it still falls short of covering production costs. He noted that egg output has declined by up to 25 percent as extreme heat reduces chickens' feed intake and raises the risk of disease.
Daily production, which stood at 40,000 cartons five months ago, has now dropped to around 25,000. With fewer laying hens and rising demand, prices may continue to climb.
