Mangalbare, September 2:
Himalayan Orthodox Tea Producers’ Association (HOTPA), Nepal, has implemented the tea production code of conduct (CoC) in five more tea factories in the eastern region to ensure the quality of the tea produced and fetch a better price in the international market.
The code has been implemented in Kuwapani Tea Estate of Dhankuta, Sriantu Tea Estate, Mist Valley Tea Estate and Himalayan Shangrila Pvt Ltd of Ilam and Kanchanjunga Tea Estate
of Panchthar.
HOTPA formulated the code two years ago and plans to implement it in all tea factories gradually.
HOTPA executive officer Dilli Baskota said that the association issues certificates to the factories which come under the fold of the code. It also trained 742 farmers affiliated to 17 different groups before implementing the code.
The green tea produced under the code will fetch an additional two rupees per kg. Baskota said the code was introduced to ensure the quality of Nepali tea as per WTO’s food security standards.
