Industrialist Roop Jyoti arrested

Kathmandu, November 7

Police today arrested former state minister of finance and renowned industrialist Roop Jyoti on charge of housing fraud.

A team from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) arrested Jyoti from Tribhuvan International Airport at around 8:30 pm, after his Silk Airways flight from Singapore touched down.

SSP Uttam Raj Subedi of Metropolitan Police Range, Teku confirmed Jyoti’s arrest on charge of housing fraud.

The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday had vacated the stay order on Jyoti’s case paving the way for police to arrest him.

In December last year, the police had issued an arrest warrant against Jyoti on complaints that he was involved in housing fraud worth millions of rupees. Jyoti had immediately filed a writ against the arrest warrant and taken stay order from the court. However, a double bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Sumsher Rana and Justice Prakash Dhungana had vacated the stay order on Jyoti’s case on Tuesday.

Jyoti represents one of Nepal’s top corporate house Jyoti Group. Following his arrest warrant last year, Jyoti had denied his involvement in any housing fraud.
