Intimidation in Malaysia
KATHMANDU: Foreign workers in Malaysia are being subjected to intimidation after the Amnesty International (AI) made public an incriminating report on human rights situation of foreign workers in Malaysia last week. AI made its annual report public last week in which it had mentioned about the excesses meted out against and exploitation of workers by the Malaysian police and employers. Following the release of the AI’s annual report, the Malaysian police and companies arrested nearly 140 workers last week and started torturing them, the AI stated on March 30. AI-Nepal Director Rameshwar Nepal said the Malaysian police and employers have been abusing and discouraging the migrant workers, extorting money from them and subjecting them to violence. Nepal also said the arrested workers have been kept in overcrowded detention centres and the workers committing mistakes in the immigration process are made to pay fines, jailed or in some cases flogged. Among the arrested workers are from Bangladesh, Indonesia and Nepal and they are said to be staying and working in Malaysia illegally. AI Nepal Director Nepal said the Malaysian government has arrested hundreds of foreign immigrant workers. Also among the arrested refugees are people from Myanmar. They are wearing the card issued them by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Myanmarese refugees too have been arrested, the AI report stated.
