ISO certification can help take on global competition

Kathmandu, July 6:

Management Association of Nepal (MAN) with support from Nepal Bureau of Standard and Metrology (NBSM) today organised an awareness programme on ISO 9001 certification and its implementation. The programme was organised to create awareness among top managerial officials on the benefits of having ISO certification and international quality management system, said Kul Prasad Sapkota, director at NBSM. Having certified with ISO would ensure commitment from an organisation or a firm for providing quality services and goods that match international standards, he said. Making a presentation on the benefits of ISO 9001 implementation and certification, Sapkota said the ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) is an internationally acclaimed recognition from the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), in the field of quality management.

On the occasion, Shree Bhakta Prajapati presented a paper on the concept of ISO 9000 certification. He said that ISO 9000 standards are the basis for establishing QMS and its implementation, assessment and verification. This is applicable for both product manufacturers as well as service organisations. “The ISO certification aims at achieving quality assurance of product and service and enhances customer satisfaction,” he said, adding that the need for acquiring ISO certificate has become urgent with globalisation.

According to him, over 350,000 organisations have acquired ISO 9000 in over 150 countries, with many more in the process of setting up and implementing QMS. A total of 96 Nepalis companies so far have acquired ISO certification, while UK tops the global list with more than 60,000 companies having been certified by ISO. K P Kharel, engineer at NBSM presented a paper on requirements of ISO 9001 (2000) implementation.
