Jute Mill workers stage sit-in

Biratnagar, June 28:

Workers at CM Jute Mill, which has remained shut due to Maoists’ pressure, have staged a sit-in at the Confederation of Industries in Morang today demanding its re-opening.

Nepal Trade Union Congress, Nepal Democratic Trade Union Federation, Nepal Factory Workers Congress and Nepal Textile garments’ Workers’ Union jointly organised the sit-in.

Prior to the sit-in, these organisations also took out a rally. The rally went to the district administration office for a sit-in and demanded security for operating the mill.

Chief district officer of Morang, Madhav Prasad Ghimire said that necessary investigation is continuing.

The mill was shut since Tuesday for an indefinite period following intimidation and pressure from the CPN (Maoist) affiliated bodies. The mill has been closed due to intimidation from the Maoist affiliated YCL, Trade Union Workers’ Association and Rastriya Madhesi Mukti Morcha, said director of the mill, Ganesh Karki.

According to Karki, two days ago, some workers were beaten. Another director Nanda Kishore Rathi said workers were feeling unsafe and the mill was closed on their advice.
