Kite trade booms as Makar Sankranti nears

Jaipur, January 7:

Come Makar Sankranti and kites in the form of birds, dragons and celebrities are becoming a major attraction in Jaipur, an Indian city passionate about kite flying. The Hindu festival of Makar Sankranti, celebrated every year on Januray 14, coincides with the kite flying festival.

Huge kites, which come in different shapes and resemble among other things sparrows, dragons, butterflies, parrots and eagles are the major attraction this time. With over 600 kite shops, Jaipur expects business worth Rs 500-600 million over the fortnight. “The demand for kites in the city has gone up by 20-25 per cent. So a huge business is expected this season,” said Imran Khan, a kite seller.

Chinese kites, with their unique features and sustainability, are the major attractions but they also pose a threat to locally made ones. “Most Chinese kites are three feet high and contain a unique folding system which prevents them from being damaged,” said Kader Miyan, another kite trader.
