Lack of market hits farmers

Siraha, January 12

Farmers of the eastern Terai — the hotbed for agriculture production in the country — are said to have been facing difficulties in absence of proper market management for their produce.

Farmers in Siraha have been long playing an important role in rural economy development but now they are finding difficult to sustain themselves. The vegetable-stalls constructed by the government in seven different places of the district are either incomplete or in dire condition.

However, construction of Dhangadi agriculture market stall, began three years ago is still incomplete.

Dwarika Prasad Dahal, chief of the district agriculture development office, says that lack of budget has halted the construction. According to him, a sum of Rs 500,000 has already been spent.

Likewise, the stalls constructed in Lahan, Surakipur, Kalyanpur and Golbazaar are also in a dilapidated condition due to absence of preservation and proper utilisation. The stalls were constructed at the cost of around Rs 5 million under the Sagarmatha Integrated Development Programme (SIDP).

Due to mismanagement, the farmers are compelled to sell their produce for low price.
