Nepal named LDCs’ coordinator
KATHMANDU: Nepal is all set to become the chair of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formed a high level LDCs committee when Nepal becomes the chair a month later.
The LDC committee has deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Sujata Koirala as chairperson.
Along with Koirala, advisors to the minister, Prime Minister, cabinet office, National Planning Commission secretary, Finance Ministry, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Commerce and Supplies, Ministry of Labour and Transportation Management and secretaries of the law and justice departments are in the committee.
Meanwhile, invitee members of the committee comprise the president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce Industry (FNCCI), Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI), Nepal Chambers of Commerce (NCC), LDC NGO Federation, executive officer of Nepal Tourism Board, a former ambassadors to the USA and two experts on LDCs.
Nepal has been selected
as the coordinating bureau
for the 49 LDCs, and the
government has formed
the committee for effectiveness in work. According to the agreement made between Nepal and Bangladesh,
over the last two years Bangladesh chaired the LDCs and now for the next three years Nepal has been chosen the coordinating bureau on September 29 in New York.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dipu Moni on September 29 handed over the chairmanship to Nepa’ls Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala.
The LDC coordinating bureau plays a vital role in the development of LDCs. Nepal will also work to bring effective implementation of the Brussels Work Project (2001-2010). Along with it, it will also make effective participation for the preparation of LDCs fourth United Nations conference in Turkey in 2011.
