KATHMANDU, JANUARY 21

Nepal recorded a trade deficit of Rs 723.58 billion in the first half of the current fiscal year, as per the Department of Customs. During this period, the nation's total foreign trade volume reached Rs 921.16 billion.

According to the department, Nepal's exports amounted to Rs 98.79 billion, while imports stood at Rs 822.37 billion during the review period.

Compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year, imports rose by 7 percent, while exports increased significantly by 31.78 percent. However, the trade deficit also widened by 4.38 percent year-on-year.

India accounted for the largest share of Nepal's trade deficit, with imports from India totaling NPR 502.8 billion and exports to India amounting to Rs 73.71 billion, resulting in a deficit of Rs 429.14 billion.

Nepal's trade deficit with China stood at Rs 158.62 billion, while it reached Rs 22.62 billion with Argentina.

The data further revealed that Nepal has trade deficits with 23 countries and trade surpluses with 32 nations, including Denmark, Austria, Russia, and the Maldives.
