NIHWU flays police action against workers

Kathmandu, September 1:

The Bara district chapter of Nepal Independent Hotel Workers’ Union (NIHWU) today voiced serious concern over the police intervention in the agitation of workers of Narayani Mills Pvt Ltd in Bara district.

During the police action on August 29, Kewal Raut (40) lost his life and Hare Ram Yadav (22) of Triveni Textiles died while being brought here for treatment.

According to a NIHWU press statement, even after 15 years of service workers were neither given appointment letters nor the minimum salary fixed by the government.

The workers have put forward a seven-point charter of demands. NIHWU demanded the management of Narayani Mills and the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry fulfil the workers’ demands soon. It called for providing Rs 1 lakh as compensation to the families of the dead workers and a probe to ascertain accountability for their deaths.

NIHWU has also urged the management not to stop the salary of the agitating workers.
