Pedestrians will be fined too
KATHMANDU: To regulate jaywalkers, Metropolitan Traffic Police is initiating a fine system from May 15 in the Valley. “Those who are found crossing the roads arbitrarily and not following traffic rules will be fined Rs 200 up to Rs 1,000,” said SP Lokendra Bahadur Malla, Spokesperson for MTPD. He said that a person on foot not crossing roads using zebra crossings, overhead bridges and footpaths will be fined and those unable to pay the sum will be handed over to the traffic police who will disseminate awareness about civic education and civic sense.
According to MTPD, more than 40 per cent of road accidents occur due to negligence of pedestrians. “The policy aims to reduce road accidents in the Valley, by raising awareness among pedestrians about the precautions they must take while on foot on a busy road,” shared Malla.
Metropolitan Traffic Police has also conducted awareness campaigns and mobilised personnel to educate people on the right way of crossing roads.
