House panel to inquire PM on Ncell CGT

KATHMANDU: The Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament on Thursday decided to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal about the recent government decision about recovering the capital gains tax (CGT) involved in the record TeliaSonera-Axiata deal of Ncell.

The PAC meeting held today decided to know PM Dahal's opinion on how the proposal on recovering the CGT from Ncell was tabled at the Cabinet without proper considerations of issues associated with it.

The lawmakers, therefore, decided to fix a meeting with PM Dahal to discuss the matter soon, according to PAC Chairman Dor Prasad Upadhyaya.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister forĀ  Finance Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who was present in the PACT meeting today, however, said no official decision was taken on the issue.

DPM Mahara firmly said that the tax would be collected from Ncell by all means.

He aded that he was discussing the issue with the PM though the Cabinet was yet to decide on the matter.

Addressing the stakeholders' concerns about the possibility of tax evasion, the DPM also informed the Committee that he directed the concerned authorities to take a decision on the issue within a week.

Also in the meeting, Revenue Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, Rajan Khanal, also assured the lawmakers that the tax would be collected at the earliest with the help of a special team.
