Quarantine post refuses entry to agro products
Biratnagar, July 29:
Plant quarantine at Jogbani, India, has prohibited movement of some agro products, being exported to India from Nepal. After the decision of Indian quarantine station, export of ginger, cabbage, cauliflower and radish has been completely prohibited while permission from Kolkata and Hyderabad is required for the export of lentils and Aalas. Jogbani quarantine station has prohibited the export of vegetables, ginger and fruits earlier also. Chief of plant quarantine check post, Biratnagar, Avadesh Singh said the decision of the Jogbani station is derogatory. He accused that the decision was based on the fact that Nepali goods were making a good market for themselves in India. Most farmers in the region use the Jogbani border for trade with India, as it is most convenient. Singh said, “They ban Nepali products which are getting good market in India, but they don’t ban products like medicinal herbs. They don’t even ask for export certificates for export of medicinal herbs.” The reason provided for the prohibition by Jogbani station is ‘high level of pesticides having been used for raising these products’. India asks for export certificate compulsorily for export of any good from Nepal but it does not produce the same for the export of its products to Nepal, Singh informed.
