Trade union leaders put forth 11-point demand to include in statute
KATHMANDU: Leaders of different trade unions have demanded to incorporate an 11-point demand of the labour fraternity in the new constitution.
The trade union leaders had drawn attention of political leaders time and again while preparing the preliminary draft of the new constitution in this regard.
The leaders once again urged the political leaders to clearly describe the word 'labourers' and ensure representation of workers in all level.
They also asked to form a labour commission for effective implementation of the Labour Act and the Social Security Act and arrange necessary provisions regarding voting at workplace including for those working overseas, among others in the new constitution.
At the eighth annual general meeting of the Class Nepal, an organisation working in the field of labour and trade union sector, the trade union leaders associated with Nepali Congress and CPN-UML argued that it is necessary to include demands for healthy industrial relations and social justice of labourers in the constitution.
President of Nepal Trade Union Congress, Khilanath Dahal, said the draft constitution failed to address demands of workers.
Similarly, Bishnu Rimal of General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions expressed the view that rights of workers should be described in the new constitution to ensure their implementation.
Former President of the Nepal Trade Union Congress, Laxman Basnet, said that the new constitution should guarantee the representation of workers in every body of the state for their social justice.
Likewise, leader of trade union movement Umesh Upadhyay said that the constitution is the medium to establish the rights of workers.
Also speaking at the programme, General Secretary of Class Nepal, Tilak Jung Khadka, said the organisation has been carrying out studies regarding importance of trade union and labour awareness, among others.
