World Labour day celebrated

Kathmandu, May 1:

The 4th national congress of General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GFNTU) began here today with the slogan ‘enhance one union democracy, peace and change.’

Inaugurating the congress assembly Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary of CPN (UML) said, “For social transformation around the globe, the role of workers is the most important.” Nepal stressed on the need of workers’ unity against exploitation in the name of privatisation and liberalisation.

A book named ‘trade union and child labour’, prepared by the international labour organisation, was also released by Nepal. Sushil Koirala, general secretary of the Nepali Congress said that the welfare of workers is guaranteed only in a democratic system.

Amik Sherchan, chairman of Janamorcha Nepal, stressed on the need of workers’ unity for the welfare of the working class.

Khusi Lal Mandal, the central member of Nepal Sadbhavana Party (A), said that past reveals that a country can not develop without democracy.
