Kathmandu, May 1:
The 4th national congress of General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GFNTU) began here today with the slogan â€˜enhance one union democracy, peace and change.â€™
Inaugurating the congress assembly Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary of CPN (UML) said, â€œFor social transformation around the globe, the role of workers is the most important.â€ Nepal stressed on the need of workersâ€™ unity against exploitation in the name of privatisation and liberalisation.
A book named â€˜trade union and child labourâ€™, prepared by the international labour organisation, was also released by Nepal. Sushil Koirala, general secretary of the Nepali Congress said that the welfare of workers is guaranteed only in a democratic system.
Amik Sherchan, chairman of Janamorcha Nepal, stressed on the need of workersâ€™ unity for the welfare of the working class.
Khusi Lal Mandal, the central member of Nepal Sadbhavana Party (A), said that past reveals that a country can not develop without democracy.
