Phucchi Jamuna, Saurav win Thames poetry contest

KATHMANDU: The premises of Thames International College, Old Baneshwor brimmed with metaphors and rhymes of poets on January 26.

YUWA, in partnership with Word Warriors, Nepal’s first slam poetry group, organised an open poetry competition to promote poetry culture in Nepal, and to encourage youths to raise their voices in the form of literature. The thrilling words of the participants, appreciation of the audience and inspiring speeches by the guests were enough for anyone to have a great time at the event.

The chief guest and one of the judges, Anil Shah, CEO of Mega Bank also recited few patriotic lines he had penned in his free time. Some poets of Word Warriors recited their poems to commence the programme.

Ujjwala Maharjan, the founder of Word Warriors recited her hit piece of writing Jibro — it was one of the most loved performances. The participants were allowed to perform poems in both Nepali and English languages.

Out of 20 participants, Phucchi Jamuna and Saurav Basyal took away the winner’s crown for Nepali and English categories respectively.

From Sarah Kay, a New York based spoken word poet to popular Nepali fiction writer Samrat Upadhyay, Thames College has been visited by various literary figures from time to time. A handful of poets from Word Warriors have also worked as tutors in the college.
