Yet another brand new year. The last year I had been planning a whole lot of things to accomplish, I did accomplish some, some are yet to be fulfilled. Every new year offers new ideas. As December 31 came and the hands of the clock neared 12, I thought, what about resolutions? Resolutions are reflections of Babylonian beliefs that if something happens on the first day of a new year it will be a recurrent theme throughout the coming year. Resolutions help serve as reminders prodding us to act, implement and achieve.

Here are some of my resolutions for this year:

• Why on earth do I always lag behind in completing my homework? Henceforth, I will never postpone doing any task.

• My mom says, veggies and milk help boost energy and these are the things I hate. I will drink lots of milk, and limit soda and junk food.

• Music! Ah! I love it. This year I am not going to miss it. I will certainly learn to play the guitar.

• I hate waking up early in the morning but then I am always late to school, which is a matter of embarrassment in front of whole class. I promise to be ‘early to bed and early to rise’.

• My shoes. They are always dirty. I will clean my shoes myself.

• I will brush my teeth twice daily, wash my hands after using the bathroom and before eating and clean up my mess right away.

• I won’t tease dogs. The other day a ‘friend’ mimicked me I realise what the pooches go through when I bark back at them.

• I will try to find a sport that I like and play at least thrice a week.

• I will be sensitive to other’s.

• I’ll never give out personal information such as my name, home address, school name or telephone number in an Internet chat room or bulletin board and will never send someone I chat with on the computer a picture of myself without my parents’ permission.

• If I see an unsupervised gun or another child with a gun, I will not touch the gun and will get help from a trusted adult.

• I will choose non-violent television shows and video games and will only spend one hour ‘at the most’ daily in these activities.

• I will check to see if I can give away any of my unwanted clothes, toys and shoes to the needy.

• I will quit negative ‘’self-talk’’ (‘’I can’t do it’’ or “sI’m so dumb’’).

• Whenever I’m feeling angry or stressed, I will take a break and look for constructive ways to feel better, such as exercising, reading, writing in a journal or talking out my problem with a parent or friend.

• When faced with a difficult decision, I will talk to an adult about the options I may have.

• I will resist peer pressure to try drugs, alcohol or smoking.
