A farmer’s contribution

Nepal is an agricultural country, therefore farmers occupy an important place. A farmer is very important, as a matter of fact he is the backbone of Nepali society. He not

only feeds us, but also provides raw materials for our industries.

He works from morning till evening. He remains busy in the fields, feeding the cattle, ploughing, hoeing, weeding and watering the field. His wife and children help him a lot in his work. He is usually satisfied having a simple meal that consists of dal, bhat and chillies. Whether it is summer or winter, he is seen working in the fields.

His wants are few, and his only wealth is the land he has. If the harvest is good he is happy. But if there is no rainfall and there is no harvest, he runs into debt.

Then he has to lead a miserable life and blames his luck. He hardly ever gets good clothes to wear and good food to eat. He lives in a very humble cottage.

Life in the open air has made him quite healthy and strong. The capacity he has to work is admirable. Though he is illiterate, he knows everything about his work. He is happy wearing his best clothes in a fair or during the festive season.

A farmer is perhaps the most useful member of our society and thus there is no doubt that his prosperity means the prosperity of our nation.
